Policies for Private Lessons

The following policies apply to students enrolled through my private teaching practice. All lessons and services are provided by Bach To Basics Inc. These guidelines are in place to ensure scheduling, communication, and lesson routines remain consistent and run smoothly for everyone.

Children enrolled in lessons with me through the Outschool platform are subject to the platform’s full policies and terms of use.

Please review the sections below for details regarding private lessons.

Supplies & Examination Fees

Students preparing for The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) or other conservatory exams are responsible for paying all application and examination fees directly to the examining body. Students must ensure their application is submitted before the posted deadline.

Students are also responsible for purchasing their textbooks, repertoire books, and other required materials. These can usually be sourced from local music stores or ordered online. Annual material costs typically range between $20 and $50, depending on the level of study.

International students should confirm material availability with online retailers in their region to avoid delivery delays.

Lesson Expectations & Student Responsibilities

Students should come prepared for each lesson with the necessary books, handouts, and a working technical setup. Lessons are conducted using Zoom. Students will need a device with a camera and microphone, along with a stable internet connection.

Students are encouraged to practice at least 15–30 minutes, three times per week to support steady progress. Advanced students and those preparing for exams may require additional practice time.

Scheduling, Missed Lessons & Refunds

All lessons are scheduled in Mountain Time (MT) unless otherwise arranged. Students are responsible for attending lessons at the correct local time and should account for daylight saving changes, which may vary by region.

Students are eligible for up to two make-up lessons per academic year (September through June), subject to availability.

Make-up lessons are not guaranteed. If a make-up cannot be arranged, a credit will be applied to the student’s account.

Advance notice is required for all cancellations. Missed lessons without notice will be charged in full.

If the instructor must cancel, a make-up lesson will be offered or the cost of the missed lesson will be deducted from the following month’s invoice.

Termination of Lessons

Students may stop lessons at any time. There are no cancellation fees; however, two to four weeks’ notice is appreciated when possible.

Parent/Guardian Involvement

Parents are encouraged to assist younger students (typically under age 9) with lesson setup and maintaining focus.

Establishing a consistent practice routine at home greatly supports long-term progress.

Internet & Technical Issues

If the instructor’s internet connection fails, a make-up lesson will be offered or a credit applied.

If a student disconnects mid-lesson and cannot return, the lesson may be considered complete unless otherwise arranged. A make-up may be offered depending on availability.

Students should test their audio, video, and internet connection before each lesson to help avoid disruptions.

Late Arrivals & Lesson Punctuality

Lessons begin and end at the scheduled time. Late arrivals cannot be extended beyond the scheduled lesson time.

If the instructor is late, the full lesson time will be provided.

Lesson Recording

Students may request to record their lesson for personal review. Recordings may not be shared or distributed. Instructor permission is required prior to recording.

Studio Holidays & Breaks

The studio is closed on major holidays, including Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Thanksgiving (or the local equivalent). Additional breaks and closures will be announced in advance.

Flexible rescheduling may be available around holidays when possible.
