Why Study Music Theory

I believe that when a person does not understand the theory behind the music it is equivalent to being able to read words but not understand their meaning. Theory is the main way in which musicians communicate to one another. As in all art forms communication is at the foreground. As with all languages there are rules regarding spelling, grammar, sentence structure, and form, theory provides the rules of grammar relating to the language of music. The wish of all performers and artists is to communicate to their audience. It is essential to be able to speak a language clearly to fully understand what it is capable of. The study of theory will not only provide a student a better understanding of how to accomplish their musical objectives but allows a broader understanding of what the composer intended and what, as a performer, the music should try to communicate.
