Why Study Classical Music?

Classical music in my opinion is about discipline and logic in an emotional environment. Performing classical music requires precision reading, interpretation, and a strict observance to the intent of the composer and not the performer. This style of music requires the performer to understand the theoretical, historical, and emotional nuances the music presents while being steeped in intellectual thought. Classical music can be compared to a puzzle, in that each section within the music itself must be perfectly executed. Problems regarding technique, dynamics, and phrasing must all be solved to create the perfect performance. It is here that students are asked to perform the impossible, to change fingerings, play difficult and uncomfortable rhythms, and to move away from their own melodic desires to create the exact interpretation the composer intended. This music is often enveloped in beautiful melodic themes, captivating harmony, and emotion while remaining highly logical and mathematically complex. Classical music is not only inspiring and uplifting but, simply put, is exercise for the brain.
